Introduction

International trade has always been a significant contribution to the economic growth of a country. In multiple studies, the growth in international trade volumes is shown to positively effect a country’s GDP. With more than 80% of all trade being seaborne, seaports play an essential role in both local and international trade. A port’s activity, wether it rises or falls, is critical to a country’s supply chain. This project analyzes the seaports and the daily vessel movements around the world.

Data

The dataset is called “Shipping Ports Around The World” and from Kaggle. It consists the information about almost 500 international shipping ports pretaining to location and amount of ships that pass through daily.

Creating The Database

For the database, I created an entity relationship diagram to visualize the three tables and their attributes through Lucidchart. I then exported the code to create the database structure in MySQL.

The Queries

What are the top 5 countries with the most ports?

Which shipping port has the most vessels?

Group each country by the amount of vessels

In each country, are there more vessel departures or arrivals?
